Property Claims - Overview

The Role of the Claims Adjuster
Your insurance company will assign an experienced Claims Adjuster to assess the damages caused to the property (ie. House, garage, or other insured buildings). They will be the direct contact for your insurance company for your on-going claim.
Damage to the Property
The insurance company, through the Adjuster, will asked an authorized contractor to provide an estimate of the costs of repairs that will be needed to restore your property to its condition prior to the damage or loss. If the damage is extensive or requires specialized workmanship, the insurance company may require competitive quotes to complete their analysis.
Some insurance companies provide options for repair. These include allowing you to choose contractor of your choice to complete the repairs, or consider a cash settlement and perform the required repairs yourself.
Contents and Personal Property
Personal property that is damaged, destroyed or lost is normally covered under your policy. There may be certain exclusions in your policy that you should review. Items that cannot be repaired and will need to be replaced with property of similar quality. You should be aware if you have full replacement cost on your property. This coverage will cover the full replacement cost including taxes.
Your adjuster will help you in completing an inventory of any property list, damaged or destroyed. You could also consider a cash settlement for items you decide not to replace. These values are subject to current values and could be adjusted for age and condition of the property before it was damaged or destroyed.
Additional Expenses
If the damage happened to your home and it is extensive, you may not be able to continue living there before repairs are completed. Most policies will reimburse you for any reasonable and additional costs which are necessary for your to incur in finding another suitable place to live.
Deductibles
Most insurance policies contain a deductible. This amount would normally be deducted from your overall claim. In the event of a major or total loss, your deductible could be waived.
